mint cancelling accounts

Hi,

Jus got off the phone from Mint after my card being declined for no apparent reason - after a long wait listening to some real nice music I was told that they have recently raised their lending criteria and so reviewed all current credit accounts against the new criteria and cancelled those that don't meet it - not a very nice way to treat existing (and perfect account history) customers.. being told that the card has been declined in a shop full of people is not a nice way to be informed of this considering its not any fault of my own - not even a letter from mint!!!

They say that they will continue to send statements until the balance reaches £0 at which point the account will be closed (he said as its not my fault, nothing bad is going on my credit file it will just show payments made and account closed by myself).

Anyone else had this happen recently (aparently it happened on 08/03/2006)? I'm disgusted.

Shaun

Yes someone else posted a similar report a week or so ago as their account had been dormant for a year, I think?
You could ask them for a 0% period as compensation for being acutely embarassed in the shop,if they say no close the account and get another card from someone else.
  • Is mint issued by royal bank of scotland, if so then maybe this is why.

If you have a loan account with Royal Bank of Scotland or National Westminster Bank, you may get an alert about this account from CreditExpert in January or February. Don't worry – it’s actually good news.

These banks are providing new data to Experian, the credit reference agency behind CreditExpert. They have decided to share the details of more accounts in an effort to support responsible lending. When the information is added to your credit report it will trigger a new account alert, even though this may be an account you have held for several years.

A more detailed credit report will help you to build a clearer picture of your financial situation.

For more information about account information please see the Frequently Asked Questions on the CreditExpert web site.
  • The post a week or so ago was in relation to a dormant zero balance Sainsburys account, which is a joint venture with HBoS.

Mint is part of Royal Bank of Scotland and appear to be closing accounts where there is an active balance if they decide to. They are within their rights to not continue to extend you credit, but their T&Cs should say they will write to/email you if facilities are withdrawn. I know it does not however feel good to have this occur.

I think the main gripe you should have is that you did not receive a letter before you tried to spend on the card, which I agree is not good. This is the first time I have heard of active accounts being closed (apart from for fraud) and if you do get a letter from them, I'm sure this forum would be really interested to read the text if you've no objection in sharing it.

    Thanks for sharing this information.

This was an active account (it was actually only a couple of months old) and the guy on the phone stated 'There is nothing that you have done wrong and it will not go against you at all'. The letter was aparently sent out on the same day that the account was closed (08/03/2006 - NOT the 30days prior to any changes that their T&C states, or even a phone call that they say you will get within 24 hours if they cancel it immediately due to fraud/other conditions) - therefore I believe a break of T&C on mints behalf (which will be forming a part of my letter of digust to head office).

Another couple of problems I now face (which I have yet to contact them about) is that all statements are provided online (no paper statements) and I do not have a direct debit etc. set up, I simply login online and make payment from my debit card at each statement date... Mint have now withdrawn my access to online services, leaving me unable to retrieve statements and unable to make any payment to the account.

Dave, sure don't have any objections... the main gist of the letter I received today (this includes everything in a simple form - I'm not missing bits out to soften it up at all ;) ) basically reads:

"After a general review of your account and exercising our right under the card agreement, we require the immediate return of the card(s) issued to you. (and a load of gunk about cutting up the card and placing in the pre-paid envolope enclosed... which funnily enough was not enclosed  ).

Your credit limit has been withdrawn, although the current balance may continue to be repaid under the terms of the agreement... etc. (state rates and minimum payments) until the debt is cleared.

Then goes onto say that if I have payment protection then this was also cancelled as of the date of the letter and so were all other offers (i.e. airmiles etc.) and that if I comply with the request then no further demand will be made for the payment of the full outstanding balance."

This letter doesn't even give a reason - in fact nobody has given me a decent reason yet, all I have had is 'Its due to a change in our lending criteria' - which I really can't buy as I'm and existing customer and have a perfect account record with them - the card was no where near its limit, my wages easily meet the minimum that they state (which is £10000) for their classic card and I have a pretty good credit record (I don't have any trouble getting credit elsewhere)... thus I really am baffled.

    Regards,

Seems odd they'd cancel a "properly" used card! I hope they don't cancel mine - used only for SBT via cheques!!
Were you in a promotional period?

adm, yes it was in a promotional period: 0% interest on purchases/BT until November 06 - the card was only 2 months old and I had used less than a quarter of the Credit Limit that they had provided on purchases (had no BT to it).

To be honest I wasn't happy with them from day 1 anyway (mainly due to bad online banking) - now I'm just disgusted and boycotting RBS totally ;)

    Cheers,
    Shaun

you should contact them and ask for a print out of all notes that they hold on file, with the account being 2 months old they must have made an error during the processing state. if you get a print out of the notes they hold it might give some clue ;)
