Cheapest calls to Australia from UK landline?

Hi,

I'm looking for the cheapest tariff when calling Australia via landline from the UK. Also, calling from UK landline to mobile phone.

Is there an easy to use, no contract deal out there?

Many thanks.

  • From what I have read, it depends who is the line provider. If its BT then you can use something like talkntalk (i have not used them), where you use a access number to call at a fixed rate like 1 min.

If its something like virgin media, its more complex (as i have found),

calls from a virgin line can cost 3p + for every call you make, there's a connection cost of 7p.

Only if you add another 1.50 per month on to your bill, + I need it for tomorrow

N.B. Prices shown are from a BT residential landline.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Use BTs international freedom plan, you get inclusive anytime calls to Australia for up to 1 hour then you just re-dial for £5 per month.

There is a fair usuage policy though so dont go mad on it :)

  • If you've got a BT landline, then call Australia landlines for free - see the DialAbroad web site at http://www.dialabroad.co.uk/mobile/plus/

This uses an 0870 number to access the service, which are now included for BT landline customers (or if you are with another provider but get your line rental bill from BT) - see http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/0870-say-no for details

    Not necessarily

Some people will have these included by BT only off-peak or only at weekends, unless they buy the all calls inclusive package

For people paying line rental to BT but using another calls provider, they'd be able to use BT in the free off-peak or weekend periods by using a 1280 prefix. If they use their main calls provider, it will depend whether this company has also adopted having free 0870 calls

In any case, the terms and conditions state that callthrough providers are exempted from being counted free by BT, so it would probably be only a matter of time before new ones are charged

For the OP: if you have a broadband connection all the time, you might also look into VoIP, voice-over-internet. Some Australian VoIP providers, which you could choose to use from here, have flat rate calls i.e. few cents connection fee only.

Calls cost 1p min from landlines. I used it when I had NTL/Virgin & it worked fine. Now I have Skytalk so dont use it anymore.
:smileyhea A SMILE COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING
  • I use budgetcom which costs 0.5p perminute. I got the number from this site (thanks Martin!) so you should be able to find it here or with google. I find this is cheaper than having an International plan (I'm currently on BT).

  • Sorry, ignore my last message, I didn't read the OP properly! Budgetcom isn't the cheapest option for landline to mobile, I use it for LL to LL.
