New driver car choices
I'm sure this has been asked lots and lots of times but I've had a search and looking through the recent posts in this thread I can't find anything recent!
I'm 19 and just passed my driving test Monday (Woohoo... first time ) and I am now looking for a car. I have my eye on Corsa C's which is the third gen Corsa. I am looking at spending around 2500-4000 and hope to get a 1.2 with fairly low mileage (under 40k seems reasonable) and no more than 7 years old. 2004 preferably.
I have found some cracking cars for this price that meet all my tick boxes, Clio's, Corsa's and a few Fiesta's. I do have my heart set on a Corsa 04 SXi 1.2 in black though .
Insurance wise I'm looking at ariound 1.6k to insure almost any car i've tried whether it be a group 2 or 3. This is with myself as the policy holder, fully comp, my parents as named drivers and me as the main driver which is all above board. I can get the insurance down to 1.2k with myself as the policy holder, my mum as the main driver and myself as a named driver (I would be driving it as the main driver though)
I know strictly speaking this is breaking the law but is it a bad offense? Does everyone do it? Does this still mean I build my NCB? Would it effect my mums insurance if I had a bump?
I'd like those answering but thats not my main question!!
Is a Corsa 04 a reasonable car to get? Auto trader seems to be listing them at around 3.5k for one that meets all my demands but is this a good price?
Also what other cars are good to go for? I would like a Fiesta but they seem to hold their value a lot more than than Corsa's and Clio's
Thanks for any help!

I know strictly speaking this is breaking the law but is it a bad offense? Yes driving with out insurance is a bad offence! 6 points atleast and if you do claim they won't pay out for your lovley car
Does everyone do it? No they don't
Does this still mean I build my NCB? No not with most policies, direct line being the execption
Would it effect my mums insurance if I had a bump? Yes it would infact she may never beable to get insurance again as she will have commited insurance fraud!
Try getting an older deawoo matiz the letter SXi would scare off any insurer. When I passed I drove a 20 year old renault 5 for 3 years to get a good NCB then changed to an MX5 much better than driving a corsa ! the renalut was a fun drive you could get the back wheel up on the corners!

I wasn't going to be driving without insurance, I'm not that stupid It would be with me as policy holder, my mum as main driver and me as named driver.
I don't want a Matiz, my friend had one and when you turned the air con on it couldn't even get up hills. I'm being serious as well!
The SXi Corsa doesn't have a bigger engine, it's literally just a different interior (I think!) but yeh I can see why it would scare 'em off!Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0 -
Having owned both I much prefer fiestas to corsas, I have a corsa at the moment (02) and it just feels cheap compared to a fiesta. Fords are better cars all round IMO.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

If you do get yourself 6 points inside the first 2 years of driving it also means a ban, just like the rest of us getting 12 points.
Don't go there, pay up for you as main driver and choose a cheaper car if you have to.
Engine choice is not neccessarily the only factor in the insurer assessing their risk. An SXi having at least the appearance of a sportier model may statistically be driven by more reckless drivers who are more likely to get wheels stolen or whatever, so they increase the premium.
A good example of a group 1 car aimed at people like you are the Toyota Aygo, Citroen C1, Peugeout 107 all essentially the same car http://www.channel4.com/4car/ft/feature/motor+show/506/1
Use one of these for a few years and get a good NCB, then you can afford a more interesting car.0 -
When in fact you yourself would be the main driver, which is insurance fraud. (Known as fronting).
Was pretty sure it was but I like to make sure. Must be so many young drivers doing this around the country, I know of at least 9 doing it!chez22 wrote:Having owned both I much prefer fiestas to corsas, I have a corsa at the moment (02) and it just feels cheap compared to a fiesta. Yeh, my dad drives a Focus and he likes that, I would prefer a Fiesta as they look nicer and are bigger as well, also they are a little bit faster on acceleration from what I've heard. Always a bonus in a 1.2 for getting out of roundabouts and such. Only problem is they hold their value a little more than Corsa's!AdrianHi wrote:Engine choice is not neccessarily the only factor in the insurer assessing their risk. I was looking at the superminis such as these but they all tend to be just that.. Supermini! I will be using this for some long journeys as I do biking and go to places like Wales (from the Midlands) etc and it's nice to have a bigger car than these so I can fit the bike in without having to disassemble it too much! These cars are of course an option. Another problem is they are pretty new designs and are quite expensive for what they are at the moment!Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0 -

Loads of folk do it, but they are taking a risk and on here we are not allowed to give advice that breaks the law. When I was young it was the norm .0
