As my IBM drive became a deathstar last week and I had great difficulty recovering any data off the drive I am looking to be able to back up my main drive easily.

Does anyone know for sure if these WD drives can be formatted like internal drives with mulitiple partitions?
Do they show up as an external storage device in explorer and not mess with the drive letters already taken?
Can you use xcopy or xxcopy to mirror the contents of any partition on your internal drive on it?

    Thanks ;)

It should show up under "devices with removable storage" if your on winxp, and it will get automatically assigned a new drive letter that is not in use. :)

All Dell'd up ;) several times over :)
  • If you don't mind a very small amount of engineering, you can make external drive of capacity to suit.

Most external cases are ATA IDE with a media converter (sometimes known as a bridge) to USB or Firewire.

So buy a case you like from ebuyer or ebay, then buy the drive you like

Join together and hey presto. Then when you run out of space just upgrade the drive

  • Should have mentioned that ebuyer code 043759 is INSANELY useful - allows you to connect any standard IDE drive externally whether HD, CDRW, DVD etc.

Saved my bacon a few times when the boot drive needed repairs. Whip it out, stick it in this device, plug into another machine, fix the MBR, boot.ini etc and off you go. Or if it still doesn't work, all your data is there to copy off.

unless i am mistaken if you buy an internal drive and an enclosure it might work out to be the same cost or more compared to an external drive.

I have ordered the WD drive at £49:99 and a USB 2 card at 9:99 as my pc is usb 1.1 which will be a bit slow in transfering data across.

All the hard drives are the same size so it must be possible to insert a different one in the case if you wish ;)
