Razor blades -tips and disccussion

My 1st contribution: try the old double-sided style razor blades if you really want to be cheap. Unfortunately they don't give the closest and smoothest cut so that's why I'm here.

2nd tip: Whether shaving legs or the face there is no need to buy special razors. Mens razors usually just work better.

3rd tip: Storing your blades in oil will make them last longer.

4th tip: You can even sharpen the traditional blades:

Question:

What is the cheapest long term option for good blades?
There are offers from time to time but it's still very expensive.

Options:

* Ebay - What has been your experience? Lots of fakes but are the fakes ok-ish?

* Abroad - Will the next forum member to visit somewhere like Vietnam please bring a load back to sell on at a profit to us on the forum. Also, what is the cheapest place within cheap flight range (see flightchecker)? Poland, Czech?

* A website out there somewhere with decent blades
http://www.blademail.co.uk/ is expensive

What about dry shaving? http://jimelliott.suddenlaunch2.com/

p.s I wonder what non-safety blades are like to use:

I have recent bought 40 mach 3 turbo blades from ebay for a spot of 20 quid. Much better value than in stores and can t fault the quality. I do wonder how the seller aquired so many as they seem to have a constant supply

    That does seem cheap, jackb.

I was put onto Asda and Tesco's equivalents of Mach3 by a friend.

I've previously consistently found MP3 to give the best shave, but they are bloody expensive ( by the way, I'm a bloke who doesn't shave his armpits/legs/bikinibits so I wouldn't know anything about that ;) )

The Asda/Tesco (probably Morrisons too but I haven't checked) ones are significantly cheaper, and I don't make a worse job of hacking my face to pieces with them, so I'd heartily recommend them.

    Tescos: 8 cartridges for £4.24 (Mach 3s £7.98)

Asdas: 8 cardridges for £4.24 (surprise surprise, same price as Tesco!) (Mach 3 £7.58)

  • I bought some Mach 3's from Sandown Park Market (or so I thought)...Went to use them and they must have been fakes..Hacked my face to bits compared to proper ones..awful awful...you have been warned!!!!

These blades are considered by many as the best double edge blades, which are made in Sweden.

Americans send to the UK to get them.

i use the trad double sided wilkinson, but bought a pile of 5-blade packs in prague, as they are 50p compared to pound sixty or so over here. also bought few tubs of slovak make trad shaving cream and brush. i'm happy to ignore all advertising on the hi-tech, multiple-sonic-bladed-close shaves, with the hi-tech prices :)

Having tried them all I find that Wilkinsons own brand triple blades are as good if not better than the rest.

A razor and 4 pack of blades costs around £2 and 4 packs of blades £1.49p.
Compared to Gillette etc these are a bargain !

    Better qualify the last post.

By Wilkinsons I mean the budget store not the razor manufacturers .

I have to say I normally end up buying my blades abroad. They are a fraction of the cost of buying them in the UK (bought from States, Canada, Singapore, HK and Thailand). This also goes for the shaving creams, etc.

Have you ever tried buying the old fashioned style razor blades in a Market, street or closed. I always found them cheaper there often three packs of 5 for £1.00
Cant swear for the price these days as I havent bought any for a while.

Out of curiousity, how often do folks tend to change blades?

I guess I make a blade last a month or two, but suspect I'm fairly abnormal in that respect!!!
