iTunes playlist

My wife and I both share the same PC under different user accounts. We both listen to the same music folder through iTunes and we are sharing the entire library. We both create our own playlists but what we can't seem to do is share these playlists between us. I can export a playlist as a text file but is it possible to import them too?

I have tried logging on to iTunes both as separate iTunes users and as the same user and it makes no difference. I know you can share playlists between computers but you each have to be logged in to iTunes to do this, we are only allowed to have one instance of iTunes running at once on the one PC. I looked at the iMix option too but it appears you have to buy the music for iMixes.

Any ideas at all?

My wife and I had simlar problems. In the end we just made a separate music folder for each of us and just update them with our own songs as necessary, which is good for me as she keeps putting loads of kids songs on for our son to listen to, and they don't really mix with my music very well lol!

Back to topic, if anyone does have an answer to this, I'd be interested as well.

If you move the iTunesLibrary.xml file into a shared location and point both iTunes instances to the same file then both instances should have the same library including playlists. Though i am not sure if you can merge the two files so you would have to choose one persons library to replace the others.

I think you can also export playlists as .xml files which can then be imported into the other instance of itunes. I can't check this out just now as my work won't let me install iTunes.

There is probably a more sensible way. But if you do go through the one shared location route (post 3) you can have two top level playlists folders, one for each of you.

To copy one playlist to another (I don't think it's possible to just duplicate them) create the new playlist. Doubleclick the new playlist to open it in it's own window. You can then select all the songs of the playlist you want to copy and drag-copy them to the new playlist.

Thank you for your replies folks - but I have just sussed it!

I have discovered an option under File/Library/Import Playlist and this does the trick. I couldn't seem to find this listed under the iTunes Help pages.

By exporting as text files the playlists are imported without any tracks, but you also have the choice of exporting as .xml files and this works perfectly.
