What's Good to Buy in Sainsbury's?

Hi All,

I usually shop at Morrisons or Tescos, but my Mum has just offered to take me to Sainsbury's this afternoon. Am in a complete tizz, as I don't know what of their value range is any good or what their offers are likely to be.

Can you please tell me - what value stuff you like (I think they call it basics) and what good offers there are to look out for.

Thanks

and keep an eye out for the white label basics. Most is in the junk food range - 25p chocolate bars etc
Order of events: Banks lose our money -> get bailed out -> were inflating GBP to cover it -> now taxing us -> next will grab your funds direct -> things get really desperate to balance the books. What should have happened?: banks go bust and we lost our money much quicker

My local Sainsburys drives me nuts but I keep going back because some things they do are just better than other supermarket sesp the Tesco I go to as an alternative.

    1. Easy Cook Italian Brown Rice, fantastic flavour, v.healthy and never sticks.
(ditto the easy cook white rice except it's not as flavoursome)
    2. Own Brand pizzas...kids prefer them to Pizza Express ones even.
    3. Mutigrain seed bread is heavenly...even the picky cool teenager can't resist.
    4. Fruit and veg are very good quality on the whole .
    5. Lamb mince is even better than my local butcher where I buy all my other meat supplies. (sainbury's posh sausages are nice too ...but the butcher is better!! )There's usually a BOGOF on bacon.
    6. Wine range is vastly superior to my local Tesco and Morrison's and there are usually some good deals on.
    7. The Missus loves their range of own-brand chutneys.
Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!

Sainsburys basic beef mince is really nice ,better than lots of the most expensive cuts ,it is excellent value too at 63p a pack ,makes a great shepherds pie for a cheap dinner!

    Quite right!

Their own brand dried pasta is good.
Their special breads are good but comparatively expensive.
Great and good value frozen oven crinkle chips.
Nice own brand ice-creams, cones, lollies.
Their "mignons morceaux" type snacks are excellent for dips etc.
I'd say fruit and veg more expensive than Tesco in general.

My local is a nightmare on inaccuracies on the bill, so look carefully through it before leaving the carpark!

Personally I'd say watch out on the fresh fruit front (try saying that after a few drinks). I've had a few dodgy buys - apples that are mushy, tomatoes ("flavour ripe") that are off within a day.

The deals are worth looking out for - reduced price on PJ fruit/probiotic smoothies was a good one when I went last week.

However if you do make use of any of the deals - make sure you check your receipt! I check mine every week now and can honestly say that I often end up going straight to the customer service desk before I've left due to a deal not being authorised as its gone through the till. I've told customer services this months ago who admitted that they were having "problems" with their till system, and have highlighted it again recently. I am now saving every receipt that features a deal omission, and will write if things don't improve dramatically.

Some great deals, but double check your receipt to make sure they've gone through.

Try their Dried Vanilla Prunes - gorgeous. Also, due to a grabbit last year I started using their frozen extra lean mince, only when its on BOGOF though as its £2.69 for 500g, and I now use half as much as when I bought fresh and froze it by the pound as you can use small amounts instead of having to defrost and use a whole pound at a time, some of which got thrown away.

I always used to shop at Tesco using £5-10 worth of coupons every week. However, since christmas I have been going to Sainsburys and I had to say that I now prefer Sainsburys even if they dont take coupons. I personally think that Tesco quality has nose dived and it looks more and more like a glorified £land. I had to go to Tesco on Tuesday for some frozen HL sausages which used to be £1.97 for 20. They had an offer of buy 2 bags for £2.50. When I went to buy them on Tuesday they had not only changed the packaging but now you only get 14 for the same price! I am in the process of writing to Tesco to find out why.

Toffee or Chocolate Tiffin 99p for 3 bits in the bakery section. The main reason to go to Sainsbury's. It may just be my branch, but I dont think the reduced items are ever particularly reduced by much.

Look out for the red 'clearance price' stickers on the shelf labels in the frozen section.

I'm also a fan of their own brand fruit teas - currently on a seemingly long term 2 for £2 offer (£1.59 each) 40 bags in each box.

They have a overhauled kids range - some introductory offers for the frozen items, a new 'wholegrain caramel stars' cereal.

Their own brand (made by tivali) veggie burgers are far nicer than Quorn.

Their value range (Basics) is generally price-matched with Tesco's (with the same tendency to shift prices without a moments notice). The bread is usally pretty good, apples (when they haven't been crushed by boxes on top), the rest is usually junk-food orientated.
