Restaurant recommendations in Edinburgh?

Options
Staying 3 nights in the Grassmarket next week. Last time I was in Edinburgh I got caught out not booking a table so wandered the streets for ages looking for somewhere to eat! Can anyone recommend some places in advance this time?

One night in a nice place for a 30th Birthday dinner and the other two somewhere a bit cheaper with some atmosphere would be ideal. Not picky about style, I'll eat anything!

Thanks

    I loved this place: http://www.mussel-inn.com/

Found it looking at popular restaurants on tripadvisor, it's just behind Princes Street. Relaxed, informal and friendly with quite simple but really tasty food. Really reasonably priced too! I'd go there all the time if I lived there.

A little more upmarket, there's another place in Old Leith called Skippers. It's in a lovely setting. We walked all the way there from Princes Street - wouldn't recommend that as the bus takes about 10 minutes. My husband probably wouldn't have been so grumpy if we'd go the bus there!

It's their 30th birthday this year and they are doing champagne at 19.79 a bottle if it's within two weeks of your 30th Birthday - you need to bring evidence with you! I'm not a ridiculous mine of information about stuff like this it's just that we went to Edinburgh for my 31st and I noticed the offer!

We had the set price lunch which was very reasonable - I had an entire fish! It was delicious, as were the neeps & tatties :) I'm so hungry now!

We took advantage of the La Tasca offer found on this site as well. The bread was nasty compared to the lovely stuff at the Mussel Inn - I couldn't get enough of it - fabulous for mopping up the mussel juice!

There are a couple of threads in the Scottish Forum that may be useful:

If you are staying in the Grassmarket, there is a good choice of places in the area around the Usher Hall - Some are busy & need booking but others will be no problem & cab still be very good.

Wander up the West Port/Lady Lawson St or Kings Stables road and you will soon come across them. :)

We went to Amber restaurant at the Scottish Whiskey Experience, which was excellent, but a little pricey. Only has about 12 or so tables but is lovely and it will be only up the steps and turn left on the way to the castle, you cant miss it, about 5 mins walking.

Last year I went to Edinburgh and ate at The Mussel Inn on my own and it was fab.

    My particular favourites:

    Expensive - The Kitchen
Cheaper but still quality - The Dogs, Tony's Table
All Organic and fairtrade - Urban Angel
    Breakfast - The King's Wark
Drinks - Bramble - has won lots of awards - Best Bar in Britain. Is hidden away and a well kept secret (shhh)
  • Living in Edinburgh I agree with Dave's selection, adding The Outsider, just above the Grassmarket, which has views over the castle, great food and a reasonable price. It is also cool. You'll definitely need to book tho.
