Are you near any universities or hospitals? They often have their own banks of temporary workers and don't draw from agencies. There can be allsorts of jobs - manual, clerical etc.
I've been temping for a local uni for the last eighteen months and I've rarely been out of work (except by choice).

I booked a week's hol to Greece and stayed there for 6 months and some of my mates just got a flight over and then found someone to rent off and find a job, depends what country you are going to.

Greece is part of the EU, so you don't need work visas if you're an EU passport holder.
