what difference does a name make. as long as the work is done.

    Exactly.

Often, "the work" - is not done, - which is when I need to know who I spoke to.

I was not aware that I could ask for a staff number etc, - I will do this in future, thanks :)

I have this problem all the time when calling retailers etc, very unprofessional. The conversation usually goes something like this

Could I have your name please?

    Bill

    Bill who

Just Bill everyone knows me (or we don't give out last names)

    OK

    (Later)

    Could I speak to Bill

    Bill who?

    You have only one

    NO there are several.....

I used to be the "1 man IT department" for a small travel, with a call center of about 6 staff. Everyone had a "Telephone Alias" - a completely made up name to give out to customers if required.

But there is no need at all for you to have the surname of that person - if you have their first name, and know that they are branch manager of X branch, then if you make a complaint/praise about them higher up, they'll certainly know who you are talking about.

In my opinion this is how it should be... each person is still uniquely identified, but they can't get stalked... and you could have fun making up names too!
You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.
