bank rip off

well here is a classic example why people should fit the banks.
my elderly mother has a lot going for her including good health and being able to run her affairs with the bank in such away that she puts me to shame, so can anyone help please with advise on the following.
direct debit on account for sky 25.00 per month.
on 9th APRIL they applied for dd the following tuesday she checked her account in fact she went into the bank to get a statment she was told there was 72 quid in the account she had this double checked? she used her solo card in supermarket cost 22.00 on wednesday
on the saturday her account had been emptied by the bank, they had removed 125.00 in charges
for sky and hounoring the payment for supermarket and at the end ofthe month they will remove another 28.00 quid as part of there charges:confused:
just to make things clear the bank now say its not there job to pay out dd applied for by sky [the money was there] they are saying sky didnt claim the money? yet bank statment clearly shows sky applied for dd on the 9th April, [bank seems to bend dd rule to suit itself.
she has talked to too different deptments one being the head office they refuse to budge saying they are in the right.
well she was left with no money which i find a disgrace considering her age, and i have no need to point out everyone finds it hard
anyone any ideas please
thanks:confused::mad:

Ok let me get this straight.

    She has ordered Sky.
    She had £72 in account.
She went shopping, spent £22 on card.
Sky was set up and she was charged £125 startup cost from Sky
She has now been told that there is going to be a £28 charge for going informally going over her overdraft limit (presumably £0)

    Is that correct?

First off, would it be ok to use a smaller font? ... the one you have chosen is really difficult to read. And please use more punctuation, things like 'on 9th APRIL they applied for dd the following tuesday' are difficult to work out.

But, I'm assuming you mean that:
On Thu 9th April Sky took £25 by direct debit.
On Tue 14th April her balance was £72.
On Wed 15th April she spent £22 (i.e. remaining balance was £50).
By Sat 18th April charges had been taken by the bank.

    Is this correct?

What do the bank say the charges are for? Are they for something that happened this week? Or are they from last month? If she has internet banking, what does it show her balance at on Thu 9th?

Did she have an uncleared cheque being paid in when the balance was £72? Her cleared balance may have been much lower.
  • sorry about the font . firstly she has had sky for 2 years she had no un cleared cheques. rb10 has it right, no cheques and apart from that spent in the supermarket nothing else to go go onto account.the charges or some of them were removed by the bank leaving her with no money? one of the charges is for the bank allowing the solo card payment to go through, they have charged 35 quid for the privlidege. the rest of the charges are for not paying dd out for sky so two trans actions have cost her 70/75 quid. the bank have said sky didnt claim the money till after 9th april, [the 16th in fact she has it on a printed statment from the bank sky applied on the 9th for it the account had enough money to more than cover it so what can she do ????
i should point out totaly unrelated my mother was out side the same bank 3 months ago, when the guy in front of her started using any unusual amount of cards and obtained money ,she went into the bank and reported him , long story short that guy was arrested, he had over 60 stollern cards he had been using so the bank told her, and yet after saving the card company money she has not even been given a thankyou.
and now the bank treat her like this. out of order
    thanks
    for replys

The charges have got to be for something i think you need to get the bank to explain the charges too you and what exactly they were for. the only thing I can think of is if sky tired taking more than £50 in which case it would have bounced and been charged.

I agree with willo65, the £125 of charges will relate to some other transactions that were either were paid, unpaid or caused by the use of an unauthorised overdraft.

Also if the balance was £72 that may have not been the available balance, this takes into account any pending card payments on an account. There may have been nothing or a lesser amount than the direct debit available, meaning that when the payment for Sky was attempted there was not enough available and the bank bounced the payment causing a charge. I've tried to understand most of what you are asking but it's not very clear. It will also depend on the bank itself, not all banks work off the available balance when paying DD's/ SO's/ etc., some work from the account balance (which is what is physically in the account at that time).
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.
  • Don't forget charges can come out quite a time after the thing that is being charged for. For example if she was over her overdraft limit on the 12th March the resulting charge may be taken from the account on the 30th April.

Charge dates vary bank to bank. The banks don't just randomly invent charges to take from the account, get your mother to call them and ask them. The bank will provide the rationale behind the charges and if you've never had any charges refunded before most banks will refund them as a good will gesture.

Short answer: ring the bank and ask! :)

    Which bank is it though?
  • There's definately something missing here - the charges either accrued for an earlier transaction or perhaps Sky have tried to take multiple payments and only one was successful, the others failed due to lack of funds and charges applied as a result.

Banks dont just charge for no reason - the letter from the bank about the charges will explain all.
