compatability problems in the dessert

in Techie Stuff
used an external hard drive on a vista operating system now will not open on an xp system only in autoplay, it was borrowed to copy some pics but he is working an xp system and it was fine did the copying and handed it back the pc sees the external harddrive on the my computer but when you go to open it, it asks which program to use but when you plug it in it goes through all the files then opens so that you can use it any help
