The only con for me has been having to be polite every time my fat ugly friend says "at least I can write my own cheques".

You should reply to that with "does the pie shop not accept cash then?"

Lots of jobs require a credit check. If you work in some Govt, Police and Military jobs you will be subject to credit checks to check that you are not hiding hugh debts that could make you susceptable to bribary, and also to confirm previous addresses that you have lived at, as this forms part of your background. Also if you work in IT, handle cash, want to work for a bank. Thats modern employment nowadays.

Checks are done with your consent.

so BR would make the best employees as they have no hidden debts,I think that they have forgotten the reason behind the checks and it seems that just being BR will exclued you from some jobs rather than a hidden huge debt that might be a reason for you to steal/ be bribed, and I also don't like the implication that BR are more likely to be dishonest,I think they should have to prove this is a fact first.

No. Being BR does not make you a safe bet. It could be perceived that the lack of available credit could actually make you even more willing to do something dishonest! We have all heard of tales where someone borrows money meaning to repay it, and then borrows more and more until they get found out.

Also if you hadn't declared it when filling in a financial questionaire, and it showed on a credit check you could be considered to be unreliable.

Moving along slightly, Im sure some professional bodies for solicitors and accountants exclude you if you are BR. So Im afraid BR is not a Pro but a Con when it comes to jobs.

Jennie65, I hope you dont feel dishonest, and I am not saying you are, but you might be considered to be a higher risk in certain employments in the same way that young drivers are charged more insurance as they are considered higher risk!

I think in reality very few jobs do a credit check and I wouldn't be applying for anything of that type anyway.

    PROs
    - not having to worry when someone is at the door, when the telephone rings or when the post comes
    - being able to sleep at night
    - not feeling constantly stressed and on the verge of tears
    - knowing that we can live within our means on my salary

    Cons
    - the emotional turmoil involved in making the decision to go BR
    - the feelings of being ashamed, guilty and lots of other negative feelings when I did go BR including feeling worthless and like a failure
    - having pupils that I teach comment on me being BR
    - knowing that other teachers probably also know I was BR

    - having to think twice about moving house to be closer to family and friends as I don't know how we will get around the credit check for the lettings agency due to me being BR and being the sole earner in the household
