Minor car accident : Advice

I was involved in a very minor accident this morning (which I suspect was six of one half a dozen of the other fault wise). My car just has a bit of white grazing to the surface of the finish of the bumper and the other car appeared to have similarly small levels of damage. I tried to swap details with the other driver but he didn't seem that interested although obviously as it was outside my house and I went in for a pen and paper he knows my address and registration etc.

I phoned my insurance company to ask whether I needed to notify them as I don't intend to claim for the damage done to my car. They said that I didn't and that if the other driver wanted to claim he would have to do so through his own insurers.

Do I need to do anything else? Thank you for your help and advice.

Whoever you spoke to misinformed you.

You do need to report the incident to your insurer. Send them a letter clearly marked "for information only", and put in the letter that you won't be making a claim.

Should you hear anything from the third party, then pass it on unanswered to your insurers to deal with.

There is nothing else to do, but you will need to declare the incident if you looking for new quotes over the next few years.
  • Thank you very much. I did think that not doing anything sounded wrong.
  • You must advise insurers otherwise you could be in breach of your policy. I agree with the poster about re putting something in writing
