Abbey Current Account Help?!

Hi i had an Abbey current account and noticed that you could upgrade to a family account paying £15 a month for this.
I have been paying the £15 a month now for 3 months and really dont want this fee paying account.
My problem is i have poor credit so i cant close this account and reopen a new one.
They have told me on the phone that i need to go into the branch to downgrade it but when i go into the branch, they either say they have never heard of the account or i need to phone telephone banking?
Has anyone had this problem before and downgraded? or is it not even possible?
Any help appreciated!
