British Gas Dual Fuel Price Fix 2009 - Coming to an end
I know I'm going to be paying way more than I am at the moment when my price fix ends at the end of this month.
I called British Gas and asked them what I should do and was told they would write to me before the tariff finishes, but I don't trust them as I know they want me to be paying the maximum, so what's the cheapest way for me to get my gas and electricity at the moment?
I'd prefer not to be tied in, but I don't need a paper bill and can switch online if I have to.
I'm in Essex.
Thanks

It will vary according to your consumption.
You need to feed your consumption figures in kWh into a comparison website and it will show you the cheapest.
EON seem to have the cheapest for most people at the moment(£30 penalty for leaving early) and BG websaver 2 is also pretty competitive(£30 per fuel if leaving before the end of the year)0 -

You're going to struggle if saving as much money as possible is your ultimate aim. The vast majority of the tariffs that turn up at the top of the switching sites have exit fees (or, in npower's case exit fees but called annual discounts paid in arrears). IME edf online 6 seems to be the cheapest online, no exit fee, tariff, but you need to check it out yourself.
PS Agree wholeheartedly about not wanting to be tied in. Why tie yourself into a Big 6 company that according to the latest Which survey has such generally terrible customer satisfaction ratings? Be free to b*gger off at a moment's notice would be my matra.

A £30 penalty for leaving early is hardly a huge deterrent and these small fees are getting commonplace to deter people switching for cashback.
There is little point in joining a company that has no exit fee for leaving if they charge £hundreds extra on their tariffs.0 -

Actually, on the premise that I always believed you had me on ignore because I suspected I posed questions you couldn't comfortably answer and would hate people to think that's why I put you on ignore, you are now off ignore (and shortly to be facing searching questions on that amazing £31 per month BT phone/BB deal you are allegedly on ).
If you read my post 'without prejudice' I was stating that edf online 6 are the only very cheap tariff that doesn't require a minimum commitment in the form of an exit fee. E.on's exit penalty runs until June 2010. It's also a fixed tariff when most people seem reluctant to sign up to such a tariff. Certainly on my usage and in my area edf are precisely £1 per year more than E.on....and NO exit fee. I know which I would go with (of the 2, but as you know I would go with neither, really). £30 is £30 when all's said and done - it's money they haven't earned so why be so blase about paying it to them?

Thanks everyone. I'm wondering (having read some of the switching supplier horror stories on this forum) whether it might be worth sticking with BG abd just getting their cheapest dual fuel tariff. From what I can see, the savings are not going to be huge if I do move."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0
