Delay in payment after going straight?

Hi all,

Im really sorry if this has been covered before, Ive had a look around but cant find anything to help.

My girlfriend and daughter were living alone receiving, housing and council tax benifit, tax credits and income support.

I was claiming job seekers after falling foul to staff cut backs last February, living alone in my flat which I have now given up.

I have moved back in with my girlfriend and understand we have now got to inform tax credits, job centre, council and so on....

But I am told by the job centre that all benefits will be stopped for up to 6 weeks whilst our claim is processed???

I have no idea how we could live 6 weeks without any funding, we both have no family and are both in a dire amount of debt as it is, are they aloud to take this amount of time without payment?

No word of a lie if someone here knocked on my door today and asked for £1 to use the phone box then I couldnt give it to you, thats how bad our situation currently is so I have not a clue what we'd do for 6 weeks!!!

Anyone know any easier way???

Any help is appreciated.

Thankyou

I think it can take that long, but I'm not sure how often it does tbh.

I guess it is a council or HA property if she receives HB?

If so contact them and they should be ok about it. Dito the council tax department.

As for income, do you have any family who can help out in the meantime?

I was told this is not really allowed but in the same breath she said, if you apply for a crisis loan the first question they will ask is if you can ask friends/family...

Child benefit won't be affected so you will a least continue receiving £20 a week from them.

Have you given them all the info they need to assess your claims?

As your JSA is in payment it wouldnt be a fresh claim, you would just be adding them to your claim, that should not take six weeks to process. It would be required for your partners IS claim to be closed before she can be added to your claim.

Most imprtantly though - If you dont declare the change of circumstance you are breaking the law and could be facing paying off an overpayment on top of your debt.
