I live in York and I can endorse all of Polly's choices. I would differ only on the number one choice. For me, this is Le Langhe. The food is exceptional but make sure you're not in a hurry!

La Bottega Delle Langhe, The Old Coach House, Peasholme Green, York, YO1 7PW. 01904 622584. Open Mon-Sat 9.30-5.30.

Ristorante Bari in Shambles is nice, though I've never been in the evening.

Though Bettys is great it's very expensive and as others have mentioned, you always have to queue!

If she likes *Thai food-Siam House in Goodramgate takes alot of beating (upstairs)

There is also a good Chinese restaurant nearly opposite the *above. It's nothing to write home about decor-wise but the food is excellent and authentic. (also upstairs)

Lastly, though it belongs to a chain, Cafe Rouge do nice food too......their creme brulee is to die for!!!

Edited to add name of the above mentioned Chinese restaurant - The Happy Valley.

  • I have to agree with those who voted for the Blue Bicycle, which is superb, although it is expensive (at least £37). We also like the Fox and Roman pub, which is outside the centre, opposite the Marriott hotel. Very reasonably priced and a pleasant pub.
  • I live near York, and do not recommend taking your 60 year old mum out in the city at all! Micklegate is usually the worst place for howling drunks, but they spill over into St Helen's square and anywhere. so go for an 'early bird' if you stay in the city otherwise take her out to Scarborough! You cannot go wrong at the Green Room at 138 Victoria Road. Ring 01 723 501801 after about 5.30 pm one day to book in advance. Free parking in Victoria Road after 5 pm. You may need a disc thing, from one of the shops, to cover an hour if the council alters the notices for the Summer season - still free though. They have an 'Early Bird' starting 5.30 for £16 per head 3 courses, less for 2 courses, wine about £15 a bottle, (take what you have left home with you!). Robert Porter the chef is top whack, his mum looks after the covers, of which there's only about 15 or 16. When you have finished you can take your Mum for a drive round the sea-front. or up to Olivers Mount with a panorama over the town. OR look on the Stephen Joseph Theatre website and book a couple of seats at the nearby theatre of Alan Ayckbourn fame. In May and June it wil be Moonlight and Magnolias about the making of Gone With The Wind - actors up close, amazing production - or How The Other Half Loves, an Ayckborn classic directed by the man himself - you will probably bump into him in the bar afterwards. In July the Ayckbourn will be in rep with an extraordinary brilliant Pirates of Penzance. No running the gauntlet of York drunks. Your mum will think she has had a day to remember. Good luck whatever you do.
