Cheap alternative to cane toppers
Hi everyone
If you use bamboo support canes in your garden, don't waste money buying expensive rubber cane toppers. Instead, I glue the (washed) lids from milk cartons to the top of the canes and it alleviates the danger of people poking their eye out just as effectively! Semi-skimmed even comes in a garden green colour! :rotfl:

We use empty beer cans as cane toppers . The shiny metal also acts as a bird scarer.
Works for us as we have plenty of empty cans , also makes our plot look 'interesting' (looks like we're growing a brewery out there
).
Thnks to OP for the milk top idea :T
will start saving them for when the supply of cans dries up ..........;)

I use those little Actimel bottles
they don't blow off in the wind 0 -
We use empty pop bottles, the large ones that things like coke and Tango come in. Luckily for us the in laws drink loads so always have lots for us.0

Corks are good for smaller diameter canes

We saved a lot of wine corks thinking there would be something I could make with them but in the end I used them to put on the end of canes. I never did think of something else they could be used for.

I have seen them used, on their sides, to keep terracotta pots off the ground / patio. This space gives better drainage and keeps the patio a bit cleaner. If you position them right, you can't see that they are there.
Quite a bit cheaper that the terracotta 'feet' you can buy.
Edit: Ooh, just had a thought. You could use a hand full of them in the bottom of pots to save using quite so much compost.0 -
I had never even thought of topping canes! Is this something I should be doing??Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0
