yep, my brother was due to go on some sort of manoeuvres with naval reserves on the Uganda, was lucky in that he was flown back pretty quickly just before she was commisioned for the war:oBlackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?

I would like to point out that I wasn't upset about YOU hypno letting her go, rather at her school for organising the trip. Any school in China that is allowed links with the outside world, wil be allowed to do so because they are politically correct. So any trip she goes on will be pure vanilla. She won't see the real china just like someone who does a tourist trip to the great wall won't see it either. And if anyone tries to ask an awkward question they will be deflected away from or suddenly the perfect english speaker won't be able to understand you.....
so let her go, but understand it will be a sanitised China she sees and not the real vicious thing

ps I also went on the Uganda. We were on the last full cruise before the Falklands War kicked off and so followed the boat and what was happening to it

Your post very definitely came across yesterday chev as being upset/angry just as much about me even considering letting her go, as the school, as well as the cost element of it. Fair enough - the school has offered the trip, but it is our choice whether we filled in the form to say "yes please".
She might not see the "real" China - but she will hopefully see enough of it to allow her to start formulating her OWN ideas, political, humanitarian, historical, whatever. Perhaps a glimpse through the crack of a door will give DD enough to make her want to learn more.....
