Sorry to be a pest again. Tried to install SP from Administrator's account but getting same error message as before. Any other ideas would be gratefully received.

Like I said I've hated Vista ever since I 1st tried it, so much so that I removed it & went back to XP pro.

Anyway I've had a look around & it seems a little more complicated than I first thought http://techlogg.com/content/view/475/31/ http://forums.cnet.com/5208-12546_102-0.html?threadID=297333

There's plenty of people with issues similar to yours.

There were some pre requisites for SP1 rolled out before the release to facilitate the update, so what I would do is to go Windows Update and start installing the oldest updates one at a time with a restart afterwards until you are up to SP1, then attempt it.

Oh thank you for these suggestions, would never have worked them out in a hundred years. Before I do, can I ask if installing SP1 sounds like a likely fix for my initial problem of being unable to install my new printer? I know no one can say for sure, but I've been using a printer up till two weeks and and have never had a problem installing anything so far. I desperately need the printer to work as I work from home.

I'll go back to July 2007 ( !!!!) and start installing the failed updates manually.

    Thanks again.
