I have just bought an Iomega Storcenter Network Hard Drive and set it up connected to my notebook PC which worked fine. I then connected it to one of the ports on my router and now I can't find it, I was under the impression it would connect direct to the router, am I mistaken?

Yes it connects to the ethernet port on your router, but you'll need to create a network to copy to it etc. Read the sticky on file and printer sharing.

Cheers macman but the sticky doesn't really help me because I don't know if I am connecting the HDD to the right port on my router, there are 4 ports which you can connect wired pc's etc to and one other port which currently has my range extender plugged into it, if it needs to be plugged into the single port I won't be able to use it as I can't manage without the range extender or i have no access in my home office.

We have a network set up already.

    PS I like your signature...

No it should work off any of the ethernet ports, isn't the range extender a USB conection? It's possible you've got a duff ethernet port, try one of the others instead. Is the indicator light on that port illuminating when it's plugged in and switched on-it should do.
You have a network-do you have a wired network (I'm not referring to your wireless network)?

Glad it's fixed, I would have suggested the cable ...eventually. Sometimes it's the simple things that are the least obvious.

It was a bit of a pain to get in and out of the socket when it was connected to my laptop so I found a replacement, the light didn't come on on the router for any of the ports using that cable.;)

We keep the network components on a high shelf out of the way so it was a bit tricky to get it sorted but I think it's OK now.

I have spent many hours changing things and getting nowhere to find it was a duff cable before now;)
