    Don't panic

DS is now 14 and has always had terrible handwriting, I fretted about it for years, i've given up now.

our children cannot be perfect so why force it,
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

Looby I've been told by school (both primary and high) that by the time they're 7/8 there's not a lot you can do to correct awful handwriting. My boy had handwriting classes in a special group in year 4 (he was statemented until then so he had help) but there weren't any after that.

High school have said there's no benefit, and just to let him type at home, but with no dyspraxia diagnosis he's not allowed to type in school. SENCO said once the year 9 SATS get close the school will realise he's bright but nobody can read his writing, and will decide to allow him to type.

I think the OP is worried because her daughter's writing has changed, and gone downhill.

Boredom could be the problem, as if she is the brightest in class, she will get bored easily and be quite competent at doing the work, which may mean she is not getting as much attention from the teacher as she wants, therefore by writing messily, she knows she will have to stay indoors for one-on-one teaching.

Not really sure about the solution, but perhaps try to find out from the teacher if she could be set some more challenging work occasionally.

She is only a baby bless her, what a lot of pressure to put on her.
I would be bloody furious if my 7 year old had to miss all her playtimes and would certinly have words to say to the school over that.
In the grand scheme of things if she is bright why worry too much at the moment? All kids go through phases and putting this kind of pressure on her could turn her off writing all together for a long time.
She is a kid and should be enjoying her childhood and I think that social skills and staying part of her group is just as important.
Hope you get it al sorted and maybe I am just a bit of a too laid-back mum!!
    Good luck

Is she left handed as I've heard of other left handed children's writing deteriorating for a period. It may be that they do not have enough room to write properly on the small desks as they get older or that they are confused that they write differently to the majority.

Or they're sat next to a right-handed person who bumps their arm all the time?

edit - or i suppose a right handed child would have the same problem if a left-hander is sitting next to them?

ds can type really well for a 8yr old, he has his own lap top at home and types stories and poems all the time. If he takes his time and writes slowly his handwriting is ok, but it would take him all day to write a page of work that way, so when he writes normal speed it does look like an epileptic spider dipped in ink has been let loose on his work book lol

I keep trying to encourage him to write things, I even make up peoples birthdays to get him to make birthday cards and write messages in them :o

i thank you all for your replies and i really do appriciate them
she is not left handed, and i t was me that suggested that she loses her playtimes, (only the afternnon one) to catch up, she doesnt need one to one teaching according to all her teachers past and present,
she has said that she is bored so her teacher has asked for work from thee higher classes, she enjoyed that but once its done she, goes back into her air head world.
i know she is only a baby but i still need to read her homework etc, and at the mo i cant,
she had to write a project for something she is interested in over the easter hols, naturally she picked MCFLY the only thing that keeps her interest lol, she got all the info spend hours trawling and put it roughly, when she came o doing it in her neat writing, i couldnt read it it was that bad
If we can put a man on the moon...how come we cant put them all there?

she just had an annual eye test 20:20 vision, she is one of the popular kids in school, but (and im sorry if i offend anyone i dont mean too) she is a typical blonde airhead, she goes off into a world of her own at hime too, so its not just at school, that is until i give her tasks to do on the internet iykwim, could it be boredom????
he teacher loves her to death and she adores her teacher,
i have also started to giver her some eye q as my eldest had concentration probs too.

omg it must be me if they both have probs lol
are you sure she is in a daydream? there is a type of epilepsy that causes the sufferer to lose concentration for periods of time that can often be confused with having a daydream

Was the eye test at an opticians or the in school ones? the in school ones are often complete pants :p both my sister and I had been told year after year we had perfect eyesight by the visiting school nurse until she was off sick once and we saw a different nurse who spotted that both of us needed glasses

you can print off or buy 'handwriting paper' that has the extra lines too first one I came across was here http://www.senteacher.org/Worksheet/35/Handwriting.xhtml
also My mum (an SEN specialist teacher) always raves about sparklebox I think that is only partially free tho
You may find something on one of the sites recommended on this thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=133072

OR Maybe she's gonna be a doctor - they have the worst handwriting ever :D
The very best is sometimes what nature gives us for free.
