I've still got an account since the mid 1990s after all these years.

RIP Compuserve, the best tech support ever !!

Any other dinosaurs out there with a Classic account ??

It's Over! CompuServe Classic is Closing
http://paperpc.blogspot.com/2009/04/its-over-compuserve-classic-is-closing.html

CompuServe Classic, the legendary online service that once dominated the industry, will close June 30 after 30 years in cyberspace. CompuServe 2000, a newer iteration of the service, will remain online.

While CompuServe Classic's passing won't affect too many Web surfers, it will indeed close a major chapter in the evolution of cyberspace.

Crikey, I didn't even know Compuserve 2000 was still going.

I had an account but I can't remember anything about it now it was so long ago.

Compuserve Classic was the original compuserve account & software before AOL took them over & introduced Compuserve 2000 based on AOL's system.

Compuserve Classic account was before Compuserve 2000 & dates from 80's/90's.

I had a classic account from about 1992/93, I seem to remember it costing me about £15 a month (not including phone bills). I also remember being asked to switch over to Compuserve 2000 but it didn't work the same or I couldn't keep my account name or something so I didn't.

After another year or so with classic (gradually getting less and less useful content) I switched over to a shared Line one account, then freeuk and eventually NTL/Virgin.

I wish I had some screen grabs from those early years, I remember the forums being very active but not much else about the experience. I think I managed to get the mail and usenet through outlook express, but could you get the WWW through it's browser? It's all gone very fuzzy.

The forums still exist but have greatly reduced in number.

Yes, you could access web pages through its software/browser, think it originally used Mosaic, one of first browsers that Internet Explorer was based on.

I hardly use Compuserve anymore, kept it for my email address, but the Windows Support forum has been fantastic over the years. The help there has been incredible, helped me with some really tricky problems.
