Late Payment to Next Directory

Can anyone please advise me!! I have an account with Next website. Another family member who lives at my address also has an account with Next.

My relative made two late payments to Next, each were about 8 days late.

Next has informed Experian credit scoring agency about these two late payments and they are now on his credit report.

I was late with a payment to Next and they sent me a warning letter and I made the payment and I was not reported to the credit scoring agency.

Do companies report late payments without giving a warning, as has happened to my relation? Do they have to give a warning? Would a company report a late payment which was only just over a week late?

Could Next have mistakenly reported my relative to the credit scoring agency instead of me? Is this possible?

Any help would be very gratefully received.as I think my relative has been very unfairly treated. Thanks.

Lenders vary in this respect, as with everything else. Some always report payments as little as one day late to the CRAs, even when staff have promised otherwise.

Rather unlikely, I would have thought, unless you share the same first names.
Your relative has been late twice now. Perhaps you were let off because yours was a "first offence"

    Note for future reference:
there's a difference between late payments and missed payments. Missed payments can wreck your credit rating for years, but late payments are viewed as negative only if you attract more than two in a short space of time. Even then, the effect is very short-lived. It's your payment history with all your creditors over the last 6 years that counts, with particular emphasis on the most recent 12 months ;)
People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.
  • Thank you so much for your reply. Can you also tell me what is the difference between a late payment and a missed payment. Does "missed payment" mean it was never ever paid? In my relative's case, the payments were made eight days late in one instance and maybe 10 days late in the other instance.

    Anna,

let's say you pay a monthly bill, and the 10th of every month is the "due date".

if your payments look like this:

    10 Jan - Paid
    10 Feb - Paid
    10 Mar - Paid
    14 Apr - Paid
    10 May - Paid

then you'd have a "late payment"

    But if it's like this:

    10 Jan - Paid
    10 Feb - Paid
    10 Mar - Paid
    Apr - Didnt Pay
10 May - Paid double to make up for it

Then you'd have a "missed payment" recorded.

I'm not sure how exactly Next work this. They record one late payment on my account almost yearly. Strangely when I first opened the account I have 2 months marked as in arrears for £10!! It's a tad frustrating that an amount so small has marked me but meh it's the only account I have that has a blemish on it.

They do seem rather harsh on this subject.
  • Thank you all for the replies. I have been sick with worry about this because the family member I mentioned is trying to get a mortgage and he is afraid that having the late payments recorded with the credit scoring agency will make it difficult for him.

But now that I know that late payments are not as bad as missed payments, I am not so worried.
