Comet didnt install washing machine properly caused flood HELP

Need some advice

Got a new washing machine last Wednesday. Bought it from Comet online. Saturday night we noticed our kitchen laminate was warping in the path in front of and around the new washing machine. Called Comet they sent out engineers today who informed us that the hot inlet hadnt been capped off correctly (as the new machine was cold fill only)

What happens now they say someone will contact me re: my flooring. Surely they are liable for the cost of lifting the flooring, replacing it and having it relaid?

I am livid. I have tried to send a fax online to the Managing Director but cant get anyone to give me a fax number for his office so have sent it to 3 different numbers now. I have 3 kids running around and to relay the flooring I will have to disconnect all my kitchen appliances which defeats the purpose and it will be so much hassle. Should I consider court action?

The engineer even commented that we were lucky as the electrical cable was in the path of the water they could have set my house on fire with their negligence.

They only found the fault on Saturday, so I wouldn't have expected anyone to have got back to you yet.

Also, you'd be better off sending a letter by recorded delivery or on the signed-for service rather than faxing anything - is there an address on the website?

If you find that you're getting no response after a few days, it might be worth contacting your insurers, not to make a claim but so they can act on your behalf to make sure that Comet sort the problem out properly; most policies have some level of legal representation included.

Comet will have liabilities insurance for this. Did you get a report off the engineer with the cause of the flooding in writing?

If not you should have done and should now, very tactfully, try to get acknowledgement from comet in writing that they caused the damage.

Your own insurance may be able to help you, it's worth a try but once you get written acceptance from comet contact them and ask for their insurance details so that you can claim against their liabilities insurance for the damage.

    Good luck.
  • Give them a chance eh.

    Some people don't work 24/7.

The engineer came out today and said shoddy workmanship ruined your floor and someone would contact you.
Give 'em a chance before you write to Watchdog.
  • hey, I work for Comet. The stores aren't generally able to deal with issues such as damage to floors etc, it would be the Comet Service Centre where the engineer came from. The online workers would generally liaise with them for you, but you might get further a bit faster if you phone head office. Also be aware head office and the service centres are open Monday-Friday. Don't get angry just stay calm and firm. And be nice, I know you've been really inconvenienced but you get miles further when your nice to the staff member who has to deal with other people's mistakes. If you still don't get anywhere write to head office recorded delivery and request a reply within so many working days. Good luck, hope there's a good outcome.

    Demand compensation!

Don't forget to mention your kids and the risk of fire from damp floors.

If you unistalled it yourself You would have been liable to cap off the Hot water pipe. Although they should have checked it was okay before they left.
