the police have called aroudn and he is always tryingto clear himself for no reason
what can be done about this?

Dont know, Looks like these people wont let your friends past get away from him.0 -
It's annoying but it's a product of his past, unfortunately. Hopefully these people will grow up and the problem will go away on its own.0

They give his details to the store, or to the police?
If his name is given to the police, then the ex-friends are commiting a criminal offence.the police have called aroudn and he is always tryingto clear himself for no reason
Go to the local police station, make a complaint of harassment (against the ex-friends.
Push this as far as it can go, insist on speaking to the Duty Inspector.
As far as 'clearing himself for no reason', welcome to the real world. If the police receive a report of a crime, they will (sometimes) investigate it and, unfortunately, it means that innocent people get caught up in the machinery.0
