OH has kindly left 5 kg bag of frozen chips on (out)side of freezer .......... OK, we can have some for tea tonight (his will be intravenously) but I was just wondering how else I can use them up and wondered if it would be OK to use them in soups a la leek and (fUNrozen chip) potato soup. Wot do people here think? I mean, obviously theres a bit of sunflower oil in there but not much. Would it be OK to use these unfrozen chips in that way, make the soup and then freeze the cooked soup. Instinct tells me 'yes' but I'd be interested to hear what other people say.
Thanks all.
Thanks all.

Hi Savannah,
Personally I think I'd be tempted to stick them back into the freezer again....I know that goes against all food safety guidelines but I think it would be worth the risk as they aren't meat based. I'd try to lay them flat in the freezer so that that they wouldn't clump together too much once re-frozen.
The soup might work, but I wouldn't be keen as it could be very greasy and you could end up wasting even more ingredients.

If you wanted to use them in soup i would firstly put them in water to soak, this will help remove some of the oil that the chips have on them, I woukld not refreeze them... but I would do chips for tea tonight leave them soaking in water and use them in a oup after they have been soaking for a while
I would then throw the rest away as you can buy them for next to nothing!!!
Not money saving in a massive way, but at running the risk of giving your family a turksih tummy!!! lol.0 -
I would go with refreezing them - the worst thing that will happen is that they might not taste as crisp as you would expect, but oven chips are normally cooked at a temp of > 200 ºC anyway, so that should drive off any excess water.
As said above, they're not meat based and any bacteria that are present will be killed off when they're in the oven. It's a minute risk of food poisoning that you run with chips!
Don't think I fancy the soup option really0 -
Pink Winged you took the words out of my mouth!! I'd have shoved them back in too....0

I have refrozen chips before with no problems at all as my DH has a lovely habit of leaving them in the fridge  You'd think he knew the difference between fridge and freezer by now :rotfl:. I wouldn't fancy them in soup as they might make the soup taste oily or greasy.0

I'd refreeze that sort of quantity. If it was any less then it'd be chip dinners for the next few nights!0

hi all
my OH repeatedly leaves things out of the freezer, so what i always do is put them back in the freezer then ensure he always gets the re-frozen items and i get the new foods, he dosn't know any difference, but at least i can feel a bit smug!Every day is a school day :T:T:T0 -
I have and would again throw them back in the freezer. Theyre only potato, and once cooked at 200 for half an hour they'll be fine.
