Anyone know how to speed up boot time in windows XP?

Also got a noisey fan, Could this be due to dust inside?

Thanks.

Make sure you don't have any infections, and limit what is running at startup using msconfig. Or, backup your data, and reinstall windows. Dust doesn't increase noise, but it's easy enough to blow out if you have it.
  • There are many ways to speed up Windows ranging from simple to tedious to clever.

Simple ways are to defrag your disks and partitions.
Remove any programs you dont need.
Stop any programs starting when windoze starts that you dont need. (quicktime does this although you dont need quicktime everytime you use the pc). There will be less programs to start when you see the desktop.

Tedious ways are to save your pictures and documents and videos, and then reinstall Windoze. I did this on a laptop and reduced the boot time when the little bar goes left to right by 50%.
Go to blackviper and read a little and then download the registry file to stop services starting at boot time (the safe one). This will speed up the pc.

Clever ways are to save your pictures and docs, then install a Linux variant instead of Windoze. I recommend Ubuntu. This will make your pc run faster, be more secure, and it wont crash all the time. All windows programs have free alternatives that run in Linux, although games are the only sticking point as they dont tend to run so well. And it is Free as in no cost, nada, no charge, free beer .

Regarding your fan, dust on the fan may make unbalance it which increases noise, but just the wear on the bearings will increase noise over time.
