Updating adobe flash player?

I have two versions installed:-
Flash Player 10 Plugin 10.0.12.36 and
Flash Player 10 ActiveX 10.0.22.87
I think the last one is the latest for use with IE7 and Firefox3. When updating to the latest version, should I use "uninstall_flash_player.exe" from the Adobe website then install the latest version, so I don't leave older versions on the PC? Installing the latest does n't seem to remove older versions and I was worried they might be a security risk, "Secunia" seems to flag them up!
Also does anyone know how to set it to alert me to any further updates for security purposes?
Thanks for any info you can give, most other software has a "check for updates" selection which uninstalls the old software and installs the new, but flash player does n't seem as simple! Pity as I understand it should be kept up to date for security purposes.
