It a hack channel that enables dvd playback.

it is an unofficial update, lets call it that.
nintendo will say its illegal, but it wont affect the funcionality of your console. i personally wont be installing this becasue seriously, who doesnt have a dvd player in another form? this wont even upscale!

From the second link in that google search
The Wii DVD playback software comes in the form of a CD boot disc (you download and burn the software to a CD yourself). Inserting this CD into a Wii fitted with a mod-chip boots the Wii into a menu. Then you eject the CD, insert your DVD movie and the Wii springs into action as a fully capable DVD player.
Fitting a modchip involves opening the wii and soldering one in. That obviously invalidates the warranty. It is possible to buy one already chipped or pay for your own to be chipped. The main attraction isn't the ability to play DVDs though it is the ability to play downloads of copied games.

The first link suggests the DVD playback hack would work on a non chipped Wii (I doubted that but it is repeated by several people so probably you can)

The third link says Nintendo promised the functionality back in 2007.

No need to solder any more, there are now modchips that connect between the motherboard and the dvd drive, using an extension cable.

    There's softmodding as well.

The cost of the modchip is more than a dvd player though, so unless you want the other functionality...
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it
