critical illness insurance question

My wife and I have had our mortgage with A&L for the past 5 or so years and have been paying critical illness insurance for the same period. Last year we had a baby however due to complications at birth he died several months later. My wife has been off work since due to illness and I was wondering if it is worth my while claiming? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

i understood that critical illness means something that is life threatening???
was also told by someone in the industry that the likely hood of being able to claim on a critical illness insurance is very low, because of that fact.
i may be WELL wrong and i am sure that someone will come along and tell you.
perhaps it may be a good idea to phone the insurance company and ask. good luck xxxx0 -

I doubt you will be able to claim on CI but no harm in giving them a call to find out.

Unfortunatly, this is not something that can be claimed for on a critical illness plan. However, some life assurance plans do include death of child on them. It depends on what the condition was that has prevented your wife from working. If the condition meets the definition for a claim then you may be able to at least try.
It sounds like your wife has taken the time off for bereavement rather than anything more sinister. The only are this may fall under your CI policy is a lesser claimed area called TPD - total and permenant disability. It makes up about 5% of claims and would be assessed typically on your wifes ability to do her job. If her bereavement was that severe that she was not able to work it would fall under the remit of 'mental health' as it is to do with a state of mind. Mental health and bad backs are the two main claims for TPD. If would have to be permenant though and your wife would probably have to have no prospect of returning back to work.
Do you have an income protection policy at at all, or even a basic accident and sickness product? If so maybe a claim from there?0
