Desperate for help!!

Can someone please help restore my sanity? My son's Medion laptop running XP Media Ed with SP3 and a recently installed (by Medion) brand new hard drive has 'frozen'. Initially on start up we got the message, "Spooler Subsystem App has encountered a problem" and the 'Common' folder kept coming up. When try to access something with mouse or keyboard, it just beeps loudly and have to switch off to restart. I have searched the net for answers, but have thus far come up empty.

I restarted in Safe Mode with networking, although could not access any web pages, even though connected through wireless connection. Deleted spooler files and edited registry as per Microsft help pages and ran Ccleaner to clean registry. Still not working. Checked Event Log and it looked like it might be an AVG8 problem, so deleted AVG (now only have firewall and no antivirus!) and ran Ccleaner again.

Under printers there is nothing listed, even though a Canon MP610 was installed. Under printer properties I get "Can't be viewed. Print spooler not running. Also get same message when try to add printer. I can't restart print spooler in safe mode, just get error message.

Now when I start normally I get "Spoolsv.exe - Instruction at 0x10004220 (or 0x10001863) reference memory at 0x10004220. Memory could not be read. OK to terminate or CANCEL to debug - cannot click on either, just beeps!

This is the first time in 10 years that a PC appears (so far!) to have got the better of me. Any help gratefully received, especially if it resolves the problem and allows me to get back to work. I know this is not truly a moneysaving problem, except I can't afford to pay exorbitant prices to get someone to look at it and I'm sure some savvy person out there must have an answer for me????

PS: System restore did not work either.
