Egg - failing to collect my direct debit

Sorry if this is OT for this forum, but I couldn't see a more appropriate place.

I was contacted by Egg with a letter stating that they had failed to collect a direct debit from my account and that they would try again in 10 days time. The account in question had plenty of funds in it and the direct debit showed as still being active, although it also showed that the last payment request had been on the 24th of December last year. Egg have charged me a £17 late payment fee, which, strangely, they managed to collect via. direct debit without me making any intervention whatsoever.

I have contacted them, but received no response as of today. My questions are: (1) who is responsible for failed direct debit collection? No reason for the failure was given - I have done as much as I can, in terms of ensuring enough funds are in the account and checking that the direct debit is active, (2) do I contact the FSA, watchdog, or what, to get some attention here? I get the distinct impression something very fishy indeed is going on, although I would usually defer the conspiracy allegation in favour of the !!!!-up theory.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

  • Check with your bank and see if they can cast any light on the situation - perhaps it is their fault that the money didnt go - certainly it seems strange that your last payment was Dec 08.

Use internal complaints procedures firstly - no matter how useless you think they are - it keeps you entirely in the right and means that whoever you are dealing with cannot p!ss you about because you "havent followed the procedure"
