Car insurance, covered if no MOT?

Just wondering if you have no MOT on a car but have insurance, is your insurance still valid?

Is the policy different with different companies? Thanks

    It does depend on company.

You have a duty to maintain the car, however most companies will pay a claim if the mot has been inadvertantly overlooked and / or mitgating circumstances. However if your vehicle iis written off you could receive a lower amount on the basis a car without an MOT is worth less.

In addition if say the brakes were obviously causing a problem and you had an accident due to the brake problem this could cause problems.

    Who are you Insured with?

Car failed MOT but was caught by police being driven. Unsure of company as not mine (relative).

It depends on the exact circumstances, as a general rule the police will not normally inform your Insurers there was no MOT and ask does this affect the Insurance. They do however in some circumstances especially if you have wound them up.

In his position it would definately not be a good idea to continue driving the vehicle until he has an MOT.
