Desktop Base Unit

Hi

I am in the market for a new PC - just need a base unit as already have monitor/keyboard/mouse. My current Pentium 4 1.80Ghz seems to be dieing a slow death and is very slow in running apps etc. I mostly run Office 2007 and a few simple apps with internet and emails etc. Some video and music but no gaming.

I have 2 options - go buy a new base unit - does anyone know of any good deals at the moment? Secondly I could buy one 2nd hand. Some deals I have already seen include:

WINDOWS XP PRO
AMD ATHLON XP 1800+ PROCESSOR
40GB HARD DRIVE
512 DDR RAM
WIRELESS NETWORK CARD FOR WIRELESS INTERNET
MOUSE
KEYBOARD
£50

or this one for £30
WINDOWS XP PRO
AMD DURON 1.21 GHZ PROCESSOR
20GB HARD DRIVE
512 DDR RAM
MOUSE
KEYBOARD

or this for £50
Win XP Home Edition - product key on case (no cd)
80GB Hard drive
512MB Ram
Lite-on CD-RW drive
Sony DVD-Rom drive
AMD Athlon XP2000+ 1.26 GHZ
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 256MB

Any opinions on what I should go for?? (My PC knowledge is not too hot)

There about the same specs as your current pc

If you have the windows cd and drivers for your current pc why not do a format > reinstall to get any of the old stuff off the pc that could be slowing it down.
Also adding more RAM to your pc will help speed it up.

Have a look at this site too for speed up your computer :)
  • To be honest i would avoid all of them, The cheap AMD processors would be slower that what you have now. If you let me know what your budget is i can help you more.

Just as an example reading the minimum specs for Office 2007 it will not turn on auto spell checking unless you have at least 1gb system RAM.

If you clean up the one you have it will run quicker than the ones you have listed.

Try CCleaner, defrag the hard drive, and turn off programs that you don't use in the start menu.
  • What's your budget?
