starting from scratch

hi all, i am in the process of buying a repossessed house, and have no idea how bt will deal with it.

i would be surprised if they were not with bt, but am wondering with the number not being used for a few months, what state will the bt account be in?

Treat with great care. Repossessed means the mortgage wasn't being paid for some time - so it's likely the utility bills weren't either.

I'd suggest taking a corded phone and plugging it in as the first step. If there's a dial tone, dial 17070 and see if you can get the "This circuit is identified as ......" announcement of the number.

Then, call BT giving that number, explain the situation and see what they say. If you can't get the number, give BT the address (incl. postcode) instead. You don't have to get the line from BT of course but, in the circumsatnces, I'd strongly recommend you do as suggested before ordering at all.

As an aside, I'd also recommend reading the gas and electricity meters (with a witness) on the day you move in so as to be able to argue the issue of responsibility if necessary later on.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Even more reason to be very careful about the telephone then!

Great idea about the digital photos.
