car insurance, is it worth fully comp

Hi.

im a 40 year old driver with full no claims (over 9 years). i am looking to renew my insurance, as an example, last year and previous years i have had fully comp with NCD protection.

I have a 'W' reg megane, worth about 500 quid. Is it worth getting fully comp again this year at around £260 for the year, including legal costs and my NCD protection? or should i just go with third party, fire and theft.

advise please.

  • Check that it will be cheaper going third party, fire and theft - last time I had my renewal quote for fully comp I asked for a quote for TPFT and it would have cost exactly the same cos I had always been fully comp before!

Your car would probably be deemed a write off by your insurance company for even the tiniest claim so unless there are specific fully comp benefits you want, e.g. replacement car hire, then IMHO it's probably not worth it.

The other thing to remember is if the worse happens and you do crash, you are responsible for removing your car from the scene of the accident. Often you have no choice in this, the police just call their prefer contractor to remove the car.

Third party insurance does not cover this, fully comp does.

The days of very cheap Third party seem to be over, so as has been suggested check that there is a saving and/or is the saving worth it. Last time a looked I decided the extra £20-£30 was worth it.

Also with Fully Comp you get free windscreen repairs and only pay £60 if you need it replaced.
