My boys enjoy a variety of fillings but they also like them cut into fingers (after lightly toasting) and take them to dip into some HM Hummus along with vegetable sticks. My 11yo even makes pitta "chips" if the oven is on (pitta's, lightly brushed with oil, roughly cut into triangle shapes, spread on baking sheet and then crisped up in the oven.

    Savoury Fillings
    • egg, bacon and iceburg lettuce
    • grated cheese, grated carrot, sultana's and a blob of mayo
    • tuna mayo with sliced cucumber and tomato
    • tuna mayo with shredded white cabbage and sprouting seeds
    • cottage cheese with chopped pineapple with beansprouts
    Sweet Fillings
    • peanut butter, chopped apple, sultanas (mix together and pile in)
    • sunflower seeds, mixed dried fruits mix with a little fromage frais or plain yogurt and piled inside
    • cottage cheese, chopped fruit and grated carrot
    • To make the pitta chips for a sweet dip (ie: yogurt) simply brush the pitta with some melted butter and sprinkle with a touch of cinnamon and proceed to cut into triangles and bake.
    • chopped fruits, mixed with a dab of yogurt and sprinkled with grated chocolate  *luxury*
By cutting the pitta in half so that you have two D shapes, you can fill one half with savoury and one half with sweet - very easy to ensure your 5-a-day that way too.

    HTH :)

Packaging: A clip-it food storer (got mine from Matalan) the smaller one's so that the pitta halves will just fit but go in slightly tilted so the open end is nearest the lid. If the filling is a bit on the slack side then I simply fold a lettuce leaf or even a cabbage leaf over the open end and secure with a cocktail stick - the boys either eat it as part of the pitta, or it comes home and goes on the compost heap. They take cloth napkins anyway so they have something to wipe their mouths/hands with.

pitas make good 'toasties' ... I fill them & put them, cut facing up the slope (if you know what I mean) on my George Foreman grill for 3 minutes or so. lovely with cold meat & a little cheddar or mozzarella. I guess you could do them under a regular grill too

I mix tuna, chopped peppers, cucumber, onion and celery with light mayo to fill my pittas, as said before the mayo makes it all stick together, I also do the same mixture with grated cheese.

I have just brought some pitta bread for my daughter to try and just wondered what sort of things you put in yours?

Hi how about anything that you know she would enjoy in a sandwich.

Pitta bread is only the same as two slices of bread

  • Being the pig that I am, I find I can fit more into them if I freeze them and then defrost them in the microwave where they really puff up, and go kinda crunchy, then cut them in half (being careful of the hot steam). They seem to travel better like this as well (again may just be the way I pack my bag, normally with my lunch at the bottom. :o )
As for fillings I normally go for tuna mayo and salad, grated cheese, spring onion and mayo with salad, tomato puree, italian herbs and grated cheese or chocolate spread and banana

Just been reading through this thread, there are some really good ideas. However I am still a little confused. Do you need to toast them first to open them up or will they go hard by lunchtime?

I just very lightly toast them, just enough so they puff up and are easy to open. Slice them open then leave to cool before filling them.

    Hi destiny_star,

Congratulations on your new baby! :T

There's an earlier thread on pitta bread fillings that should give you some inspiration so I've added your question to it to keep the replies together.
