Filling a 5 Litre petrol can up

I'm just wondering how you go about filling one of those 5 litre petrol cans up at a petrol station on foot e.g. without being with a car.
Do you fill it up and leave it standing at the pump then go into the shop and pay or do you take the can full of petrol into the shop with you?
What happens if someone in a car pulls up at the pump and tries to fill their car up while you're queuing to pay?

Ive done this a number of times as I have a motorbike which I rode very rarely during the winter, and as such, often found that the petrol had 'gone off' and had no spark when I tried to start the bike and had to refill it with fresh stuff.
All I did was walk up to the pump (Id suggest doing this when the station is quiet as I felt a bit of a muppet the first time, standing bwtween a queue of cars waiting to fill up.... :rotfl:), and after filling up, left it just outside the door of the kiosk until Id paid. I wouldnt suggest taking it in with you as this may put the staff (and other custimers) in fear!!
With regard to someone pulling up while youre paying, this doesnt matter, because as soon as you put the nozzle back on the pump, it logs that transaction and allows someone else to use the pump. So you could be paying as someone else is filling up.
Hope this helps.0 -
it doesnt matter if someone starts filling up whilst you are in the shop as the attendant has to authorise everytime someone picks up the nozel, just do it0

Thanks for that.
I'll go and get some early in the morning when it's still quiet.
It's for a Scooter I haven't used since last year but as the weather is getting nicer I'm thinking I might use it again for bombing around on.

Yeh any modern filling station will be able to cope with more then one unpaid fillup on a pump, I sometimes fill up with diesel then imediatly fill up a can with petrol and get them to put the two amounts through as one transaction.
If you live in a dodgy area they might ask you to pay before filling as they have no reg number to track you if you do a runner0 -
Use pay at pump?!
