USB ports and memory card readers dont work!?

My laptop's USB ports and the memory card slots don't seem to "see" things most of the time. is there anything I can do about it?

What operating system do you use? Windows? XP or Vista?

Have you checked in Device Manager to see if any devices (specifically USB devices) show errors?

runs on Vista. They all seem to think they are working correctly!

Any idea what chipset you have? Intel, Nvidia, Sis, AMD?

If you're not sure, download and run SIW (link). Look under Hardware > Devices > Universal Serial Bus controllers - a common name should be repeated, ie: Intel(R) ICH10 Family USB Universal Host Controller. That's what I'm after, and I might be able to help find some drivers for your USB chipset.

I had this problem with my pc, usb ports work with somethings and not others. Re did op system and now work ok. I am running windows xp though.

What do you mean by re did op system? uninstalled windows and reinstalled it? Does that delete everything thats on the computer?

Try installing the drivers I've linked you to (below), and see if that changes anything:

In device manager select and delete the USB portion and rescan, they will be picked. Have you got the service pack installed, SP1 ?
