rignts for replacement of faulty camera

I'd be very grateful if anyone could help with this. I bought a £400 camera from Jessops last August but one of the buttons recently stopped working. Its still under guarantee so I brought is back to the shop. They said they would send it back to Sony to be repaired but would not replace it. Is this legal? I though that if it went wrong within the guarantee period the retailer was responsible? My problem is that they told me it would take 6 to 8 weeks to be repaired and really it would suite me better if they just gave me a new one. On the advice of the shop assistant (no, we don't replace after 30 days, we will send it off to the manufacturer for you) I did what they wanted but thinking about it I may have been a bit of a mug.........any advice welcome (except don't agree with the mug bit!)

The retailer are taking responsibility by sending it for repair. After a reasonable time, they can elect to (proportionately) refund, repair or replace, so they have fulfilled their obligation towards you.
Six weeks does seem a long time for a repair - it might be worth contacting Sony directly (the shop should have a number) to see if they can speed things up?Gone ... or have I?0
