I get my broadband with Virgin Media, and they offer a free Internet Security package (anti-virus/firewall/anti spyware/parental control/identity theft protection/pop up blocker) for free. You can load it on to up to 3 pcs per account.

I have used it for years and am very happy with it.

But Kaspersky is a complete Internet Security Suite combining AV,
Avira anti-virus is free and lightweight. Never had a virus, ever.
    firewall,
Windows already has one. Your router probably does, too.
    spyware/malware,
    Windows Defender, comes as standard.
    email spam
..is part of my email provider (spam filtering).
You can't get any better than that for free!
I can never understand why people pay for internet security.

I don't pay for it! It's free for Barclays customers ;)

I also would never trust anything produced by MS either LOL!

I run Kaspersky on 3 different computers (it's licenced for upto 3) and it's the least resource hungry programme I've ever used. I found AVG 8 a complete nightmare to use, slowing everything down to a crawl when it was running.

The only other programmes I've used that I was as happy with are NOD32 and Sygate.

And besides, internet security is a personal choice and a lot depends on what you actually use your computer for. No one will ever agree that any particular one is right/better for everyone as it won't be! :)

I certainly agree with you about AVG being resource hungry.

Windows Vista only. XP users need to download from Microsoft.com

So you can get it for free. If people didn't pay Anti-virus makers wouldn't continue to give their products away for free.

It's part of SP2 for XP.

Possibly. I don't know the economics of it. There may well be other sources of income for AV companies. Not really my problem though.

Never seen it on my PC, running SP3.

Taken directly off Microsoft website: Windows Defender is included with all versions of Windows Vista and is available to download for genuine copies of Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or later.
