Seen some complaints about Kaspersky recently people complaining that it's slows their PC's so I'll give this one a miss, just use Avira or Avast both free for personal use and won't cost you a thing

ive been using free software off the net for both firewall and virus scanning for the past 9 years and have never had any problems with a virus or malware.

people really are wasting their money by buying packages off the shelf.

just search the net, what im using at mo is COMODO FIREWALL and avast! antivirus Home Edition. When you get to there websites just make sure you download the free versions, think you only have to pay if you're going to be using them on business systems or you download the versions with all the bells and whistles.

other alternatives are AVG ANTI-VIRUS FREE EDITION and ZONELABS ZONEALARM FIREWALL.

all the above software is highly praised in the computer press.
  • i really, really like kaspersky - i've used it for a couple of years after getting annoyed with other brands - and i'd absolutely recommend it

different users have different priorities for their pcs, so for a lot of people the free software is fine - my pc is my work so i need the idiot-proof certainty of an outstanding package of security software

I used Kaspersky Anti-Hacker (the firewall) for a while a couple of years ago - really liked it, and it worked well in conjunction with the free AVG Anti Virus software I was using.

But then I got sick and tired of AVG nagging me to buy the "pro" version, so I changed to AVAST, but it wouldn't load with Kaspersky Anti-Hacker running.

When I Googled the problem it transpired that AVAST checks to see if there are any other anti virus programs loaded and it was mistakenly detecting Kaspersky Anti-Hacker as Kaspersky Anti-Virus (something to do with the executables having the same name).

So I ended up ditching Kaspersky and installing Zonealarm, which seems to run fine with AVAST, and both are free, so I haven't felt the need to look for anything else.

Fair enough, you get Kaspersky free with this deal, but after a year don't you have to start paying for virus database updates? Any AV software needs regular updates to be effective - AVAST updates every other day - for nowt!

    Now that's money saving!

But Kaspersky is a complete Internet Security Suite combining AV, firewall, spyware/malware, email spam and also has parental controls plus more, unlike AVG etc which has had numerous bad reports recently.

You can't get any better than that for free!

I use AVG for free on my 5 PCs and it works fine - it doesn't seem to slow any of them down much at all. I did have Norton on a couple and it completely missed a trojan that I got, and I only removed it by deinstalling Norton and putting on AVG. And Norton and McAfee REALLY slow down PCs.
I also use CCLEANER for tidying up the rubbish which is also very useful, and my router box firewall is pretty effective too.
There is no need to pay for good anti-virus software when you can get it for free.
