Parking ticket to a place we have never been

Arrived home early this morning after a relaxing city break, sorted out the post for me and other half-On opening one of his letters he says no way and then tells me that he has a Notice to Owners Parking fine for £70 for a place in Leeds where he has never been. Hubby is retired and usually takes me to work, potters around and then picks me up. However on the date that he was supposed to be in Leeds , we had travelled from our home in N. Wales ,by train the day before and stayed 2 nights in a hotel- we have receipts for all these. The car was in the garage and not stolen as we have security. Please help , how has this happened? What do we do to clear ourselves. This is the first communication that we have had from the Leeds council so we are past the informal stage through no fault of our own. Really don`t need the stress!

Either your car reg has been cloned or, more likely, the CEO made a mistake entering the number plate. Please help , how has this happened?
Send back the NTO ticking 'the offence did not occur' and include copies of the receipts0 -
Write to Leeds council with your comments and I suggest you also include relevant photocopies of your travel receipts. You can also ask them to provide any supporting photographic evidence they may have. It may be that the parking warden has simply entered the wrong reg number or alternatively there may be a "cloned" version of your car knocking about in Leeds.
This sort of thing happens a lot in London where people have been known to put false number plates on their cars to avoid congestion charging. They simply trawl sites such as autotrader to look for cars that match theirs then get number plates made up to match. It's a lot harder to do this these days but if you know the right people you can still get number plates without the reg docs.
I take it you haven't had your number plates stolen recently?0 -
Thanks for your reply,no number plates haven`t been stolen- live in a small village, only use this car about once a fortnight to take my mum out, otherwise in garage0
