Cat D write offs

Due to my car getting stolen I am looking for a cheapish second hand car, in the past I have bought from new using a bank loan and then kept for 6 to 7 years and then traded in.

I am not "turned on" by cars and usually had something small and reliable, my stolen car was a 5 year diesel 206, always serviced and looked after.

Due to current financial climate I do not want to take out any finance, and I wasn't intending to buy a new car so I am looking at older cars up to about 2k, some if not most of the cars I am coming across via private sales are saying that they are repaired Cat D write off's.

I have no idea what this means, I am obviously aware that the cars at some point in time have been written off and then repaired.

The cars are obviously roadworthy as they all have MOT's, but what are the pros and cons - are they any insurance issues.

My insurance company have reduced my 9 years NCD to 3 years as my car was also broken in to in the same insurance year as the theft of my car.

Would you buy at Cat D write off?

Any thoughts please - I am desperate to buy a car but don't want to make a mistake!

Thanks

  • Some cat d's are stolen recovered. Stolen with keys and outstanding until the insurance paid out. So no damage or repairs to them.

category c or b or a are not repairable and dvla wont issue registartion papers for them.
cat d are repairable and depending, on crash can be even just a small damage , but due to the value of the car being small, the insurance company decides to pay full as a write off.
i have had 2, nothing wrong as long as you a bit careful.. of if bought from garages, they are a bit more safe

This may be of use to the OP:

Basically Cat D means that it's not worth the insurers while to repair it as due it's value, it's cheaper for the insurer to pay out.

If you are willing to run the car until it's only worth scrap then getting a Cat D is not going to cause you any problems.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
