Car Insurance - No claim bonuses

Hey all,

I'm not quite sure how no claims bonuses work. I have had 4 years now where i haven't had a claim, yet looking at my current renewal quote it says i only have two years no claim. I think this is because i switch to this insurance company two years ago and didn't submit any certficates or any proof of my no claims history. My question is, if i am applying for car insurance now, can i put 4 years no claim (which is the truth although i don't have all the certificates) or do i have to put 2 years, as this is the only thing i can prove?

Cheers,

Tommy

You will have to put 2 years in as your new Insurers will want to see written proof from your current company stating how much no claims bonus you have.

Usually once the policy has been bought the insurer requests proof of the NCD claimed, and should the proof not arrive, then the insurer either increases the premium to what it should be without the NCD claimed, or worse, cancels the policy.

You can only claim what you can proove. When you started with your current company did you tell them you had 2 years bonus? Or did you just start from scratch? Some insurers will accept bonus older than 2 years if no break in cover so it might be worth getting a copy from the original company and see what the current insurer thinks.
  • thanks for all the reply's,

@ audes: when i started i didn't tell them, i was a naieve teenager who didn't know much about saving money!

I thought that would be the case. Does this mean that if every year you switch company's you have to write to your old companies asking them to send you the no claims bonus for the previous year?

Your no claims proof should be listed in your renewal pack from your current insurance and yes every time you switch company you will have to supply them with proof of the no claims you have accrued or they will start from scratch with zero no claims

  • If they don't provide it with their renewal pack (they haven't this time) do you have to phone them up then? Are they usually good at sending this out even if you're not insured with them any more?

your renewal quote listing all your details (with however many years no claims bonus) IS your proof of no claims
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

Didn't you start this thread as a result of the 2 years NCD shown on your "current renewal"?

    No-one minds helping genuine queries!!
  • sorry, i said it stated on my renewal quote that i had two years no claims, it didn't actually state that anywhere, i had to phone them up to find out what no claims i had. sorry for the typo..
