Debt Collection Agencys Are They Immoral?

Having been on this site for a few months and others over the last two years i find my self asking this quistion,
why do the debt company make it so awkward for the debtor when if dealt with in a civil matter 90% of cases can be dealt with effectivley,?
why send silly letters that have no substance?
are there employees infact immoral in the way they act on the behalf of the debt company? especially the things they say via telephone?
why would any one want such a job ?what are the benefits ?
where is the job satisfaction ?
having achieved there goal in getting payment where is the satisfaction if they have done it in an illeagl way ?
having dealt with 4 debt companys my experiance was they assumed you got in to debt from spend spend attitude which was not the case with me
i have paid half my £30,000 debt in 24 months in another 24/36 months i will be debt free and actually owe nothing what so ever, does that make me a better person?
i found that most people on these sites are attempting to clear debt and probably would do quicker if things were done in a proper and legal way
why do debt collecting agencys object so strongly when you ask for confirmation that the debt and (the ammount) has been assigned to them including the credit agreament, why the objections, its called acting in a proper and legal way ,why do they object when you quistion the amount?is it not the normal and proper thing to do
i am a decent hard working person so why do these individuals acting on behalf of the debt company speak to you in such an offensive way,
is it becouse they are faceless ,not accountable for there actions ,hence telephone and not letter contact?
just curious

Some debt collectors have intimidating tacticts. Perhaps the immorality lies in democratically elected institutions requesting debt collectors to do their dirty work for them at vastly increased cost to the debtor.
Banks selling debt off at a few pence in the pound are also responsible for the speculative harassment of debtors with similar initials and sirname to the original debtor. Many pay up even though it is not their debt.
The horror stories of debt collectors keep debtors on their toes, quite literally. The debtors often skip town if they can.

i find that the debt collection departments within the actual company you owe money to can be just as bad(including utilities). on a number of occasions i tried to negotiate with different companies in order to enable me to pay off debt - some large amounts, some small. i like you didnt get into debt through spend, spend, but through change of circumstances - i struggled to pay for years. they threaten, are rude and do not appear to listen. i ended up going bankrupt in part at least because of their lack of help and co - operation. even after the bankruptcy some companies attitudes did not change. some would repeatedly ring and ask for immediate payment, i would say im bankrupt and they would carry on regardless, asking for money.
it made me think and want to say haha if you had helped me before you would have got your money back, albeit at a slower rate, now you have nothing.0 -
that is what i have found some people who to be fair are being harrassed in to going bankrupt by the actions of the debt company ,when if dealt with properly the debts could be repaid0

I'd say they're only as immoral as the events which led up to their involvement (i.e. continuously not paying what you owe, for services rendered, by a predetermined agreed date.)
Although I can't really comment because i've never been contacted by one (probably because I continuously pay what I owe, for services rendered, by a...)
Individuals' circumstances may differ, of course... but you see my point.why would any one want such a job ?what are the benefits ?
Because it beats living on the dole?? There's a lot of jobs I wouldn't want to do but I wouldn't knock someone else for doing it... otherwise we might all have to take our turn...0 -
Hi
from my own experince i found trying to be honest with these people a waste of time,
I spoke to the CCCS my only option was to go bankrupt i didnt want to just cash advance a card and use that money we had to scrimp and save.I wrote to all my creditors offering a token £1.00 a month while we saved to go bankrupt all were sent same day recorded delvery Not one of them bothered to send a reply so we paid the money I must add at this time not one account was close to its limit or had a missed payment we had just simply used all our savings up and were no longer willing to live a life based on a lie in previous times we had done the old borrow from one to pay another they dont care how you pay just as long as you do
Then the letters start and the phone calls you know the type subtle threats to start then more personal you end up not wanting to awnser the phone at home or work one company sent us 45 letters in 1 month along with dozens of phone calls day and night I was falling apart doctor put me on prozac Not because of my debts but the pressure these people put me under they broke numerous laws I taped all my calls because they never told the same story twice
"just pay" "your the type who can but just wont" you know the lines its the worst feeling in the world you just wish you had not let others and yourself down
These agencys i dont know why anyone can get job satisfaction unless they like causing hurt and pain??and whaen you remind them of your legal rights the just snarl and snap i had one company based in ireland tell me Uk law does not apply to them!!
What i find stupid is the fact you can use your credit card to pay these people how cann that be??they buy your debt for next to nothing and then bully you into paying them a huge profit!I know for a fact some of these lovely people are given cars and holidays to places like the bahamas for being the Top collectors!!What ever we have done and however we have got in debt does not give them the right to treat us as humans Sadley in the drive for profits we just dont matter
I went bankrupt on the 13th feb this year im still called at work they still just dont belive i have done what i said i would all the way down the line there rude and threaten to send baliffs it still upsets me that i went bankrupt and the shame wil always be there its just a shame these people Dont have morals at all If you have spoken to any of these people you can understand why some people kill themselves all for money?? Sorry its just not wort it we are better than them!!!0 -
Q. Is it immoral to try and avoid paying back a debt you know you owe ? Where are peoples standards these days ? Why is it always soemone elses fault you are in debt (see the 28yrs old and bankrupt thread) ? Why should creditors have to invoke the law to receive payment ?
The main difficulty is that debt is such an emotive subject and often these emotions cloud the judgement. I have worked in early arrears departments, late arrears and mortgage repossesion as well as now a thrid party debt collection agency. Every time I think I have heard it all something comes along which amazes me. You would not believe the BS we get told even if it's low level BS like making up figures for an SOA.
All lenders will work accounts for at least 180 days before sending to us (in many cases much longer). If people dislike DCA's then they have ample time to resolve before it ever gets to us. Want us to go out of business ? Then deal with the problem before it gets to us. We are employed to recover the money owed to the lender (or us in cases where we have bought the debt), we are not employed to win any popularity contest. The time for the warm and fuzzy approach was when the account was with the early arrears team. I have said it over and over again, if you genuinly dispute the debt then by all means ask to see copies of agreements etc etc but anything else is seen as an attempt to try and wriggle out on a technicality, ask yourself - if you lent money to a friend and they refused to pay you back because you didn't have a properly executed agreement - how would you feel ? Your friend has spent the money - you have lost out and will end up even more out of pocket as a result. It is also a painfully slow process getting documentation from a lender, believe me, if we could you would have them by return of post. Everyone who is having problems with debt has spent the money at sometime and not made adequate provision should they get into bother - regardless of the circumstances that put you in bother.
My experience is that when people deal fairly with me they get treated fairly in return. Refusing to call and discuss the problem, asking for copy documentation, not providing proof of earnings, generally being obstructive is not helping you. Do you want the dca or lender to make a concession and allow you to pay a lower amount each month ? If so then why o why make things difficult ?
There's probably a lot more I should add but haven't got time right now.0 -
Debt collectors come a close second to Bailiffs. They are truely immoral.I've lost over 100lbs in two years, I can be debt free too.0

there are two sides to every story! You it seems think everyone that gets it debt has only themselves to blame?Perhaps you are super human and have never made a mistake in life?if you did not charge such high rates of intrest and ask for such low repayments perhaps more people would not get into trouble? its true we do not have to spend the money but if not for you greed in charging such high rates and offering people quiet stupid credit limits the temptaion would not be there?
You say you treat people fairly but then say only if they treat you the same way?Whats you idea of fair?If someone tells you they cant pay You always assume there lying i have been sworn at and threatend, my employer was called and every one were i work found out ,i was told get your wife to work full time Firms Dont care how you pay as long as you do there quite happy to see you pay the minimium payment for ever more
Even when you lose everything people like you still want more I dont male a living out of other peoples misery to some though its obvious they enjoy it0 -
Once again I find myself in complete agreement with dudleyboy & tootsie roll. This whole "I'm in debt...poor me" attitude is starting to wear a bit thin with me.
Maybe I'm old fashioned. I was brought up by my mother, on her own, in the late 1950's after my father died when I was six. She had no pension to rely on, no child tax credits, no social fund, no working tax credits, no savings or any other multitude of handouts currently available. Anything that we had, she had to work for.
Being 'poor', nowadays, appears to be not being able to buy the latest designer trainers, games console or having to put up with a car that's more than 3 years old etc. etc..
Sadly the truth is that, for an increasing number of people in serious debt, this is due to their own gullibility, ignorance or down right stupudity. Which is a bitter pill for them to swallow no matter how you choose to sugar it!
However, the sensible ones are the ones who manage to avoid such debts in the first place or, once realising they've got them, do something to reduce & eradicate them.
Setting out to avoid or unnecessarily delay repaying their debts is foolhardy. The only way to eliminate the need for debt collecting agencies etc. is for people to spend on only what they need or can afford then there will be no need for such agencies.
Clearly that's not going to happen so grin & bear it & pay up!!0
