stopping trading and benefits

my partner is self employed and supports me,and 2 kids ,we also get tax credits to make up the balance .
due to the rcession the business has really taken a turn for the worse and he really wants to close it as he cant see it getting better,would we get any state benefits to tide us over until him or i get another job? we have no savings,we have a mortgage ,so would we get help there?
there is a very strong possibility that he will be made bancrupt as well by hmrc,so would that make any difference?

    You can make a joint claim to JSA. They will issue a form called a B16 to take details of the Self Employment. Your partner will also need to provide accounts and details of his accountant - if he had one.
