I had exactly this with some post delivered to work. ( I work in a bank and was concerned that customers may have sent cash through the post! ). I rang the PO and highlighted my concerns over the slit mail and was told that it as most definately the sorting machines.

That is REALLY reassuring!!! thank you!

On average, this is likely to be the reason, so please don't over-worry. It's horrible to be burgled but, at the age of 48, it's only happened to me once. I honestly think that a fear of being burgled is more difficult to live with, rather than "the event itself". So don't spend your time worrying about it as it can truly drive you crazy.

I'd try not to worry although I do understand your anxiety about this.
The same thing happened to me about 10 years ago, when our holiday tickets came through the post. It was obvious the envelope had tickets in it and was marked from Thomson or whoever we'd booked with. Of course all the information in it told anyone who'd opened it the times and dates we were away and that the house would be empty at that time.
I spent the whole two weeks of the holiday convinced that we'd be burgled while we were away. It was awful.
Came home and of course nothing had happened.
